Influence of seamounts at the Atlantic Ocean on modification of the bioluminiscence and plankton characteristics IBSS Repository
Tokarev, Yu. N.; Bityukov, E. P.; Williams, R..
The bioluminescence and plankton characteristics in the euphotic layer over 11 seamounts in the Atlantic Ocean were studied. Investigations were carried out along the axis of flow over the mounts. Bathyphotometric measurements (1606 casts) were taken from 2 m to 100 m depths at 87 stations over the various seamounts with a vertical resolution of 1 m. Plankton samples were taken with Juday nets and submersible electric pumps with 36 m3• •h-1 performance. The bioluminescence characteristics varied over seamounts with different geomorphological features. The hydrodynamic gyres, created by the bottom elevations, and the upwelling of water with biogenic elements, also seem to have effects on the quantitative characteristics of the plankton. The largest changes...

With global climate change altering marine ecosystems, research on plankton ecology is likely to navigate uncharted seas. Yet, a staggering wealth of new plankton observations, integrated with recent advances in marine ecosystem modeling, may shed light on marine ecosystem structure and functioning. A EuroMarine foresight workshop on the “Impact of climate change on the distribution of plankton functional and phylogenetic diversity” (PlankDiv) identified five grand challenges for future plankton diversity and macroecology research: (1) What can we learn about plankton communities from the new wealth of high-throughput “omics” data? (2) What is the link between plankton diversity and ecosystem function? (3) How can species distribution models be adapted to...

Models of relations between bacteria and plankton, and regeneration processes in marine planktonic ecosystem. ArchiMer
Martin, Y; Lelong, P; Cauchi, B.
In order to study bacteria-plankton relationships, experimental and mathematical models were used to stimulate biological processes implicated in plankton ecosystems and to analyze community relationships. The model components are phytoplankton, zooplankton, autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, ciliates, nutrients, organic matter and phytoplankton antibiotics. This study shows the importance of some factors affecting bacteria communities dynamics and the bacterial activity in mineralization process. Bacterial populations seem to be controlled essentially by the concentration and chemical composition of organic substrates. Antibiosis and predation show a lesser importance on changes in bacteria communities.

Multiple microalgal partners in symbiosis with the acantharian Acanthochiasma sp. (Radiolaria) ArchiMer
Decelle, Johan; Siano, Raffaele; Probert, Ian; Poirier, Camille; Not, Fabrice.
Acantharia (Radiolaria) are widespread and abundant heterotrophic marine protists, some of which can host endosymbiotic eukaryotic microalgae. Although this photosymbiotic association was first described at the end of the 19th century, the diversity of the symbiotic microalgae remains poorly characterized. Here, we examined the identity of the microalgae associated with the acantharian species Acanthochiasma sp. by sequencing partial 18S and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA genes from cultured symbionts and directly from isolated holobiont specimens. Single Acanthochiasma cells contained multiple symbiotic partners, including distantly related dinoflagellates (Heterocapsa sp., Pelagodinium sp., Azadinium sp. and Scrippsiella sp.) as well as...

Pelagic habitat: exploring the concept of good environmental status ArchiMer
Dickey-collas, Mark; Mcquatters-gollop, Abigail; Bresnan, Eileen; Kraberg, Alexandra C.; Manderson, John P.; Nash, Richard D. M.; Otto, Saskia A.; Sell, Anne F.; Tweddle, Jacqueline F.; Trenkel, Verena.
Marine environmental legislation is increasingly expressing a need to consider the quality of pelagic habitats. This paper uses the European Union marine strategy framework to explore the concept of good environmental status (GES) of pelagic habitat with the aim to build a wider understanding of the issue. Pelagic ecosystems have static, persistent and ephemeral features, with manageable human activities primarily impacting the persistent features. The paper explores defining the meaning of "good", setting boundaries to assess pelagic habitat and the challenges of considering habitat biodiversity in a moving medium. It concludes that for pelagic habitats to be in GES and able to provide goods and services to humans, three conditions should be met: (i) all...

Planktic Cyanobacteria from São Paulo State, Brazil: Chroococcales Rev. Bras. Bot.
Sant'Anna,Célia L.; Azevedo,Maria Teresa de P.; Senna,Pedro Américo C.; Komárek,Jirí; Komárková,Jaroslava.
The biodiversity studies of planktic cyanobacteria started in 1997 with intensive collecting in different water bodies of São Paulo State. Due to the problems brougth by eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms, the samplings were concentrated in reservoirs of Alto Tietê region that supply drinking water to millions of people. The samples were collected with 20 µm plankton net or Van Dorn's bottle. Part of each one was preserved in formaldehyde or lugol solution and part was isolated. The culture strains were kept in BG11 and/or AMS1 media. Based on natural and culture material, 26 species were identified belonging to the families Chroococcaceae (2 taxa), Merismopediaceae (12), Microcystaceae (7) and Synechococcaceae (5). Among these species, six are...

Plankton as biological pump for contaminants in marine ecosystems: a transmediterranean approach (Merite Hippocampe cruise, april-mai 2019) ArchiMer
Carlotti, François; Tronczynski, Jacek; Tedetti, Marc; Pagano, Marc; Garnier, Cédric.
Recent research on the bioaccumulation of organic and trace element contaminants along trophic food webs suggests that plankton plays a central role as a 'biological pump' for pollutants. The MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE project (oceanographic cruise in April- May 2019) aims at studying the interactions between plankton and contaminants (metallic, organic plastics) at atmosphere/water/biota interfaces via a North-South trans-Mediterranean approach in contrasted areas (primary production, fishing zones, ecoregions, polluted bays). The target contaminants are on the lists of priority pollutants and substances of Regional Conventions (OSPAR) and EU directives (WFD, MSF). The expected results are to provide a better understanding of the transfer processes of contaminants...

Plankton size distributions and trophic relations before and after the construction of the storm-surge barrier in the Oosterschelde estuary OMA
Tackx, M.L.M.; Herman, P.M.J.; Van Rijswijk, P.; Vink, M.; Bakker, C..
Phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass distributions were calculated on a carbon basis for the inland part of the Oosterschelde, in the period before (1983), during (1984, 1986) and after (1987, 1988) the construction of the storm-surge barrier. In all years studied, both phytoplankton and zooplankton distributions are very irregular, and little consistent patterns emerge. The data were used to test the model of Sheldon et al. (1977). The observed standing stock ratios of zooplankton to phytoplankton agree with the model predictions in 1983, and are slightly higher during the period 1984-1987. In 1988, the model predictions are very different from the observed values, because of important changes in the zooplankton species abundance occurring in this year.

Planktonic copepod community in the neritic area south western part of Tunis bay influenced by Meliane river supplies (south western Mediterranean sea) OceanDocs
Ben Lamine, Y.; Daly Yahia Kefi, O.; Daly Yahia, N..
The Tunis bay is located in the North Estern coast of Tunisia and receives in its Western part flows from Meliane River. Our study aims to describe the composition and the spatiotemporal distribution of planktonic copepods in the bay in order to identify the effect of the Meliane River supplies on the community. A grid of 19 stations was investigated monthly from July 2004 to December 2004 using a 160 μm mesh size plankton net, towed obliquely from the bottom to the surface. The planktonic copepod community was represented by 21 taxa of Calanoida, 4 taxa of Cyclopoida, 3 taxa of Poicilostomatoida and one species of Harpacticoida. The presence of freshwater taxa like Arctodiaptomus salinus, Microcyclops sp and Thermocyclops sp in the coastal stations...

Pre- and post-settlement events in benthic community dynamics ArchiMer
Fraschetti, S; Giangrande, A; Terlizzi, A; Boero, F.
In all marine benthic environments, organism replacement depends on recruitment limitation, i.e. the impact of both pre- and post-settlement events on the success of recruitment. The relative contribution of pre- versus post-settlement processes in shaping adult populations has been extensively studied. Most analyses concluded that recruitment limitation is a strong determinant of adults' density. The magnitude of its limitation depends on context, varies with species, and can be strongly modified by all the events preceding and following recruitment itself. A comparison of the outcome of recruitment limitation on hard- and soft-bottom communities has often been neglected. The rules governing these two environments, in both the inter- and the subtidal,...

Preliminary results from POLMAR III (April 13-18, 1978) (SUROIT III) ATP, primary production and respiration rates in zooplankton. Complément à la Communication du Groupe Ecophysiologie du Centre Océanologique de Bretagne (SAMAIN et al.) ArchiMer
Hendrikson, P.; Hirche, H.j.; Junghans,, U..
ATP, primary production and respiration rates in seston, respiration rates in zooplankton have been investigated after the spill by "AMOCO CADIZ". Gross primary production seems to be similar to the normal situation. The rate of photosynthesis is lower at the "AMOCO CADIZ" station than at any of the others. Respiration rates are surprisingly high at the surface. ATP concentration exhibit an homogeneous pattern, zooplankton respiration are similar to the data obtained in Peruvian upwelled waters or in zooplankton culture. A more detailed computation of data will be necessary before concluding.

Présence d'un Protogonyaulax sp. sur le littoral atlantique français pendant l'hiver 1987 ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Bardouil, Michele.
A dinoflagellate belonging to Protogonyaulax genera and forming more than 20 cells chains was observed from November 1987 to February 1988 in Vilaine Bay and in the west ofIle d'Yeu (France). This species was not detected in coastal phytoplankton during preceding surveys. Close to Protogonyaulax affinis it seems to be a winter developing species for this coastal area. Vertical distribution shows in december a migration of the patch towards deeper layers. Increasing occurrences of species belonging to Protogonyaulax (Alexandrium Balech) genera inshore or coastal waters need to pay more attention to the taxonomy of such organisms. Some species are effectively well known as poisons producers.

Protozooplankton is an important component of the aquatic microbial food webs and its composition, density, and distribution reflect the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the environment. Considering the scarce literature on freshwater protozoans in Brazil and on protozoan ecology in subtropical environments, we listed the ciliates and amoebae taxa found in 13 water bodies in São Paulo State and analyzed their abundance in relation to the environmental variables. We collected two samples in each environment, fixed immediately with mercuric chloride and stained with bromophenol blue. After microscopical analysis, 74 protozoan genera were identified and the Ciliophora were dominant in the majority of the environments. The Stichotrichia,...
